Saturday, 5th February 2022, 10am-1pm - The Chapel, Austin Friars School

Tickets are only £5 for adult audience members. Participants and accompanied children free.

Steve Layden’s first Shakespearean role was Leontes in A Winter’s Tale when in the 6th Form at Morecambe Grammar School, with costumes hired from the Royal Shakespeare Company. This began a strong interest in performing Shakespeare. He then studied Drama at Bretton Hall gaining a B.Ed degree from Leeds University, as well as an AGSMD award and later a B.A. (hons).

After two years teaching in Birmingham, he became Head of Drama at Millfield School, Thornton Cleveleys, moving to Cumbria three years later to become Head of English and Drama at Lochinvar School, Longtown. He has also taught Drama at Trinity School and Samuel King’s, Alston.

He has played many Shakespearean roles, including Mark Antony, Macbeth, Falstaff, Orsino and Theseus.    A favourite acting role was John Proctor in The Crucible. He has also played leading roles in musicals and in many Gilbert and Sullivan operas, as well as appearing with Cumbrian Opera in Il Travatore.

Steve has been a Senior Examiner in English and Drama for national examination boards for over 25 years. Throughout his years as a teacher, performer and director, he has found great satisfaction in helping young students develop a keen interest and lasting enjoyment in Shakespeare.

The Masterclass will give participants an opportunity to read and act some key scenes from Shakespeare's plays, helping them to understand the language and improve their performance. It promises to be a very enjoyable class, as well as being useful additional preparation for examinations at GCSE and A level.
